Default Requesting help with FPS issues on a decent PC (MW3)

    Help me Funky.
Haha (and everyone else of course).

Okay, so here is my situation. I have two PCs, and the one I'm on now has serious trouble running games properly. This very PC used to run Crysis on Max settings! Alas, now it sits at about 25 FPS on CoD4..

What happens: In MW3, I start up the game, join a game and everything is normal. Then, after about a minute of gameplay, the FPS drops from good (I don't know what the FPS starts off as, but it is at least 60 FPS) to unplayable. CoD4 is 20-30FPS as soon as you join a game. Crysis ran perfectly through the intro scenes and everything until the game actually started (player given control and cut-scenes finished), then it dropped horribly.

Note: After the FPS drops in a certain game (always initialised by playing as a character - not in menus or scenes), the FPS for the rest of the entire game stays low. So I can start crysis, menus are completely smooth, start playing, drop frames, then exit and find that the menu now sits at the same, extreme low FPS.

    What I have tried:
    1. On MW3, I lowered every possible setting to it's absolute lowest and it improved, but still dropped frames when firing, running through smoke, explosions etc, etc.

    2. Made sure GPU drivers were updated properly, and that my copy of Windows XP was up-to-date.

    3. Test multiple games to find the issue, yet full screen high definition videos ran as perfect as ever.

    4. Deciding the system was old, messy and now possibly playing up, I whiped my system and installed a 32 bit version of Windows 7 from scratch (DID NOT UPDATE). On the new system, all I have done is installed steam, MW3, GPU drivers and Windows Updates, then ran MW3 to the same results.

    5. Pulled a "WTF" face and asked a forum for help!

    The following is my dxdiag:

P.S. I know the title says "decent PC," and I realise it is not the best, but it is decent and should be performing a hell of a lot different to what it is.

Argh, I had a spare before I moved (ancient one though) but I left it with my step dad..

How can a graphic card "die?" I've only had it for three years..
But if it is the case, I may have to buy another one.

Well i use to run 2 9800GT's in SLI when all of a sudden my fps bottomed out in promod, usually had 250 but was struggling to get 100 and in smoke it dropped into the 30's. I tried everything, re install, re format, nothing, then i disabled SLI and played with the cards and bingo, one of my gfx cards had died and i was getting better fps with just the one decent card.

What card do you have? AMD's are great in gaming performance anymore and I think your Graphics card is outdated? what one do you have? and You should've installed Windows 7 64bit but never mind.

I can run powerful games on my PC and it's not even fast, it just has a decent graphics card

    Thanks.

As mentioned above, I have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 9800 which, as you suggested, is probably dead. And the reason for not installing 64 bit Windows 7 is because it is not compatible with my computer.

The solution would probably require a new GPU but I don't want to spend such money on a backup PC really.

Graphics driver is out of date:

    Driver File Version: 8.17.0011.9713

That's driver version 197.13 which is oooold (3/15/2010). Go and get 301.24 (or .25/.32 but I haven't tried them ones yet) from guru3d.com.

Graphics card's 3 years old, you ever open up your PC and clean all the gunk out of the heatsinks? Do so now if you haven't done it in a while (or ever!). Turn it off first though eh?

And get all the necessary windows system updates too.

Thanks Funky. Yeah well I pulled it apart when my power supply died and ran a vacuum cleaner through it (lol) but I don't have access to a pressure pump or anything of the sort (well, a hand air pump?? haha).

For the driver, I went to Nvidia's website and clicked on latest driver for my graphics card and installed? But okay, I'll search for that particular driver.

    Thanks again.

How long ago was that? I have to do mine about every 3 months. And be careful using a vacuum cleaner inside the PC, you may knock something loose, or I've even heard of rare cases of static discharge which has fried components. Cans of compressed air (as Neo mentioned) is probably the easiest way to do it (leaving the vacuum cleaner running at the back help to keep dust down too). However any (non metallic) way of getting the gunk out will help, pull the shit out, use a paintbrush etc

For the driver, I went to Nvidia's website and clicked on latest driver for my graphics card and installed? But okay, I'll search for that particular driver.
Again, how long ago was that? Nvidia release updates on an almost monthly basis. On nvidia's website the latest (non beta) driver for a 9 series and Win 7 x86, is 296.10. You can also select the beta option which will give you the 301.24 drivers. Or you can download them from guru3d (who I just happen to use because they download faster for me). There are some later drivers that may or may not work, but the 301.24 should be fine

    Thanks again.
    Anytime
