PunkBuster Initialization - DL'd through Steam

Ok, so tried to buy a copy of CoD4 for my girlfriend. CD-Rom wasn't working and didn't want to wait for a new shipment to come in so bought it off of Steam. Two and a half hours later the download finally completes and we're psyched to play. BUT, start up multiplayer and first thing I get is "Error. Unable to initialize PunkBuster. PunkBuster is Disabled." SO, tried going through a friend of mine who gave me the idea of downloading through Steam and opened the PB folder in C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\common\call of duty 4\PB. Now the only files located in this folder are: eula.txt, pbgame.htm, pbsec.htm, pbsetup.exe, and pbsvc.exe. Was told to try pbsvc.exe to reinstall PunkBuster, did that twice and both times it passed its test. Tried the game, no dice. Now what struck me as peculiar is that when I ran pbsetup.exe, it didn't have any games whatsoever associated to it. So tried going to Add Game, but, not a single game to be chosen from the drop-down menu. So tried just typing in the game path but wouldn't let me enter it without selecting something from the drop down. Also am running this on her comp on XP (running mine on Vista and already had my fun with those problems) and most of the suggestions I've seen are only for Vista users. So pleeeeeease try to help me out in any way. Would extremely dislike having to uninstall and reinstall through steam with the download times >.> Any help here would be appreciated or you can contact me at [email address deleted, use PM function]

Um you may want to go to the PB webstie clear all your PB files but remember the location. Reinstall the PB set up thing and look for updates under cod4 put the new files into the old location

I am having the exact same issue. It has to be something with steam since we dl'ed the game through it so there arent the same files/folders through steam than if we had installed from CD. Funny thing is my old system runs it fine...this is my new system and I dl'ed and installed the game 2 times...still punkbuster/PB_init failure kicks. I also cannt get the enable punkbuster option in the game settings to stick so it errors right at start until I change that setting in multiplayer options...I hope some one has an answer soon as I cant play on the new rig...*cries*

i run punkbuster setup and it updates fine.
i select add a game
there are no games listed!
i browse to steam\steamapps\call of duty 4\
doesn't matter where i point the game path no games are listed.

have you made sure your firewall is allowing PB A + B it must also allow steam.
I know a few people that have had probs after downloading via steam i think they contacted steam and PB to sort it out

I just d/led it through steam, it took me two hours and I myself am hyped to play it as well.

I start it up and it routes me to set up punkbuster, I was like "Oh, I've never had to deal with this before but it seems simple." I went ahead and searched for the path since the drop down menu had nothing in it I assumed for some crazy reason it would fill itself out. Yeah, It doesn't.

I want to play my game and I went ahead and updated DirectX and all. My friend said he had the same problem and just reinstalled punkbuster from the site, but he hasn't tried it on the servers yet.

Has anyone, ANYONE come up with some way to fix this?

If it is simply reinstalling it from punkbusters site could someone give me a link DIRECTLY to what I'm supposed to d/l. I went there and didn't know if I was supposed to install the thing for COD4 or what, I'm really new to this. I've always been a VALVe steam game loser.

I downloaded from punkbusters site a friend helped me out and i extracted to the desktop and it did update and the drop down menu works. It let me add the game. However, the game still says

Unable to initialize punkbuster. punkbuster is disabled.

I even replaced the couple of files that it made on the desktop with the ones in the folder. =/


Okay so this edit started off with the annoyance that it still didn't work however i had a really weird idea while doing it.

after you do everything i said in this ***EDIT*** go to \PB in the call of duty 4 folder. do pbsvc.exe

let it run it's course. then double click pbsetup.exe if you haven't already add the game (call of duty 4 modern warfare) then click ok or whatever it is. then at the top of that box check for updates. IT WILL DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING YOU NEED. it will no longer say unable to initialize or in punkbuster "game not installed" .

try starting cod4. no more error message. the game works.

OMFG... THANK YOU LORALIROMANCE... you area ledgend, getting really annoyed that i cant play my game, so i started looking on the net, found this and i see your comment, whilst eating my pizza and in 5 seconds game found and now about toplay my game (after the pizza lol) cheers
