Key code in use?!?!?! WHAT!!

Before I rant away, I do have a legit copy of the game, I didn't download an illegal version (picture below)

The official CO4 website & Infinity Ward doesn't seem to want to load right now so I thought I'd ask for some help on here. I've been happily playing my copy of COD4 online now since when I got it for Christmas. All has been fine until today when I tried to log onto various servers, being told "Key code in use, please try and reconnect later". Now I have NEVER given my CD key out to anyone, there is no way that anyone could have gotten it either because the case and manual has never left my room. Has anyone had this before or is there a known bug in 1.4? This is probably the most frustrating thing as it appears that someone has a duplicate CD key as mine which means successfully playing online is going to be pretty hit or miss.

Any recommendations on what I should do would be great. as soon as the COD website pulls its finger out its arse and actually loads up, their support forums ain't gunna hear the end of it

Someone who did download the game illegally might be using the same cd key. Once you can try contacting activision support online or by calling them

Very possible, are you still having this problem? Maybe it was lag with the server where it was still showing you as online.

Thanks for the reply. The official website seems to be working now so I'm gunna take the case to Infinity Ward, see what they say. I was able to play last night which was a relief but its not very easing when you know someone has the same key!

I have had that happen to me when the server has connection interuption or game has frozen. I tried to log back on immediately and it said the same because it was recognizing my previous entry. No problems since.

The most likely reason for this is that you probably downloaded a cdkey stealer

most people have been infecting people by tricking people (social engineering) into thinking that the file would make your rank level 55 :o

there really isn't anyway we can help you. so your going to have to buy another CD key. Other than spending $50 on a new game some places sell legit CDkey for as little as $22. im not going to name any places though

I have same problem.

2 thinks to do:

1.Worry.
2. Go to options => multiplayer options.
There you need to go enter key.

Don't change the code. But click on verify.
Then the problem shoot be done.

If not, you have to wait. Or reboot youre comp.

1. he pinged out and should restart

2. You got you got Trojan'd and your CD key got stolen

there is noting else you can do other than buy a new CD key, because changes are that the person that stole your CD key will probably paly with Hacks on, and it might get PB banned.

My god I thought everyone new this, your punkbuster is out of date.
I had to do this twice so far.
Goto Punkbuster (http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=dl-cod4.php) Get the Client Files for your Operating System, install it, run it choose CoD4 and update it.

CoD is saying his CD key is in use,
but Punkbuster has nothing to do with this,
if he goes into a non pb server, it will say the same exact thing
so i don't know where you got that one from

Ya when that happened to me like 3 days after I got cod4 I was scared sh**less but I calmed myself down and figured that the cod4 servers were being overloaded or PB was doing something...just wait a bit and you will be able to play again...I know its hard cod4 is just great :-D

Look at I had the same problem ones.
But when I look at task killer (a program to kill programs when the don't respond)
I saw that cod4 was twice there.

I could kill the app so reboot my computer, result, that one CoD app was gone.
That's why the keycode is use (for me) Because my comp was still running CoD even if I closed.


Maybe that's helps.

in cod2, several ppl got my key somehow, idk how tho, i never downloaded much unless i knew it was a good program...
it only did that wen i was in the same server as them fortunatly, so it was all good

If your games hangs & disconnects the Master Server still sees your CD Key in use. To fix this you have to do the following:

1) Reboot your router/modem

2) Play COD4

This will reset you CD Key with the Master Server and you can play happily again...

Hey,
I had the same problem.
I fixed it by going to my connections ( I've wireless internet )
And then select another server from that you're normal using like:
Normal I use : WLAN
Now u use : Prisa
Like that, select another network and connect with it.
Hope it work also at you ;)

Hey all,

Well again the samething has happened to me, about to play or am currently playing then the sever disconnects and i'm out. so nothing new. However when i reload the server list i've noticed that the server i was playing on doesn't appear on the list anymore. I've talked to friends and they think the server is holding onto my key even after i've left the server, inturn stopping me from joining any other server.

Thoguhts?

I know this thread is probably ancient, but i had the same problem and managed to fix it in a way that nobody suggested. I'd been fiddling with file sharing over a network and then my "cd key is in use" message popped up. i finally found out that i'd turned off "password protected sharing" in "network and sharing center". when i turned the setting back on everything worked fine. hope that helps someone.

Hi mate...a friend of mine had this problem when he first bought the game.
Even the first time he used it he had the "Cd Key in use" problem.
He got intouch with Activision/Infinity Ward and told them of the problem, they simply asked him to take a picture of the game and receiptand send it to them by e-mail, they then sent a new Key Via e-mail.
Hopefully this will help you as i know he was so stressed when he couldn`t get online.
