We knew this was coming. This is a link to a story of pay to play for COD titles.
Call of Duty may be going subscription-based:(
Activision pointed out that Modern Warfare 2 was the third game in its stable to crack the $1 billion mark in sales, but everyone on the call also seemed to realize that lightning may not strike twice... at least not in these numbers. We know that the series will continue to be released on a yearly basis, but Bobby Kotick also dropped a bomb near the end of the call.
"If you think about the success we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise," he said, answering a question near the end of the call. We also were told another Call of Duty game is coming near the end of the year, but that's it for details.
Our thoughts: Activision wants to know how to maximize the money it can make from one of its biggest franchises, and they see Blizzard getting written a paycheck every month due to the World of WarCraft subscription charges. We're not sure how it would work, but it makes sense strategically.
Activision hints at Call of Duty subs, less Guitar Hero (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/02/activision-hints-at-call-of-duty-subs-less-guitar-hero.ars)

I heard of some CoD MMORPG kind of subscription based thing, but not sure if it was a rumor or real.

This will fail.
I'll eat my hat the day a FPS can go MMO and succeed. MMOs work (and can get subscription money) because they have a community aspect to them that a FPS just won't be able to match.
Call me skeptical.

If CoD goes Subs then I better get new maps and weapons every month plus none of these gay glitches.

If they can keep up with the standards that wow has then hell I would pay.
But A LOT has to change before I would even think about playing for another COD game since they have their head up their ass on this one with getting the patches out and crap.
To be honest though Wow's success is based on the fact that it's a virtual world here people can quite literally live if they so choose to. COD could not live up to that.

lol yeah. Wow adds new things to the game every month which would equal to IW putting out a buttload of DLC every month for free (with Sub) I quite honestly don't see it working since its hellish for IW to do anything as it is.

I would assume that coding takes sometime plus all the testing they have to do to make sure it works.. But if they added more prestiges, maps, guns, camos then I would be the first one to pay for sub.

LOL testing what testing if they had tested MW2 it wouldnt have the problems it has now and it would at least work
Infact 402 stated 4 weeks before the games release that they where about to port mw2 over from the xbox version to the pc ready for release so lets assume it takes 2 weeks to run the discs off and distribute them that only gave them 2 weeks to port it over no time for testing just shove it out and let the customers test it
Maybe that explains why the pc version has so many problems :-D

If subscription based game play would work for a FPS Veixs pointed out pretty much what would have to happen and probably more.
It could possibly work but the games would have to be continuous 24/7 battles, maps would have to be larger, my house would have to stop being invaded by HUGE spiders... hold on... k and the drop in spawning would have to be player picked. Probably a lot more would have to happen but that is all I can think of right now. I think EVE on line was like that? Or was it TRIBES?

That is bull****! I love the CoD series but to start charging a subscription fee just to play it...So if you were an Xbox user that would be like say 7.00 for xbox and 5-10 for CoD...Thats 12-17$ a month + the money to just purchase the game letalone play it. This has to be illegal because the PS3 is based off of a free online experiance. This would just be lowering there profits even more. Because of how pissed the PC users are already charging them monthly will just add to the deficite.
