I was wondering what people's favorite books were, if you read for pleasure. I do, and mine are listed in order or favoritism:

1. Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

2. A Soldier's Story by Omar Bradley

3. Catcher In The Rye by J. D. Salinger

4. Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy

I missed this? whaaaa?

I read lots---mainly in series or by the same author (cause once I find something good I want to keep going).

Favourites: Robert Ludlum (The Matarese Circle and The Acquitaine Progression are among my favourites).

Andy McNab--fiction or non-fiction. Always exciting and full of realism

Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of Seven Suns (sci-fi)

LOTR (seems like a popular favourite)

And, nerdy as it is, the Star Wars expanded universe (have tomes of those).

One that's a little diff is Pappion (about penal imprisonment by the French, solitary confinement for years and years--daring escapes etc----based on true story)

I kind of like Science Fiction myself, but I always get self conscious when browsing at the store... not that I buy many books... I do own the Ender's Saga... never read LOTR or seen the movies. I had a friend way into those Star Wars books at work, he said they were pretty legit.

Yeah I like 'em. Sometimes I get some pretty funny looks if I buy em---but the places that sell them must know they're pretty popular to stock so much of them and to even sell out----must be an underground thing lol

i have recently started reading the dan brown books (though im sure i have read some of them before) which are pretty good.
the LOTR books are pretty good but it was taking me a year to read each one (i was quite young 12/13) so i used to skip bits. would like to read them again sometime.
The hobbit was really good too (J.R.R. Tolkien)
Umm holes (a book we read in school for english not sure of the author)
i got into the Terry Pratchet books quite a bit last year but they started good and went downhill with the occasional leap. smiles
i have quite a few science fiction and fantasy books back home
the Kate Elliot crossroads books are pretty good, and Crown of Stars Series too.

Andy McNab--fiction or non-fiction. Always exciting and full of realism

I read the only two books I knew of that he had out. Bravo Two Zero and Immediate Action, they were very good, saw the B2Z movie as well "Sean is teh hots"...:D

I know I posted this list in another thread sorry for redundancy but I had search fail!

(R.A.Salvatore, The forgotten Realms Series of books with the Dark Elf Drizzt.)
Just in case you are interested... BTW: If you do read these books pick up the Dark Elf Trilogy First as it will make it a lot more richer of an environment for you, I think. The Icewind Dale Trilogy Came first but...

The Icewind Dale Trilogy:

The Crystal Shard
Streams Of Silver
The Halfling's Gem

The Dark Elf Trilogy:

Homeland
Exile
Sojourn

Legacy Of The Drow:

The Legacy
Starless Night
Seige Of Darkness
Passage To Dawn

Paths Of Darkness:

The Silent Blade
The Spine Of The World
Servant Of The Shard
Sea Of Swords

The Hunter's Blades Trilogy:

The Thousand Orcs
The Lone Drow
The Two Swords

Transitions:

The Orc King
The Pirate King
The Ghost King

Sometimes his writing can get a little redundant but for the most part it is very interesting and easy to immerse yourself into as he is very descriptive.

I also enjoy the Splinter Cell series of books although the earlier books more than the later ones as Tom Clancy (David Michaels) has taken the series in a direction I don't like. Still the books are good and I developed a liking for the main character (Sam Fisher) that made waiting for the next book hard.

On top of that Veterinary Medicine Journals and technical guides. Books on Psychology usually textbooks.

Nonfiction would have to be, The Lone Survivor, by Marcus Luttrell. Probably the most inspiring story of all time.

Fiction, I liked the Harry Potter series. I read those when I was young, however.
I enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird.

Anyone ever read The Spooks books?
When i started them when i was ten, they where like nothing else. If anyone here has a little boy around the age of 10, get the the Spooks apprentice by Joseph Delany, but be prepared to pay for the other 6 books :P
Unfortunately, im a little to old for those books now. I do still read and enjoy them, but mainly just to see what happens. Kinda sad :(
Same goes for Skulduggery Books. Great, but a little too young.

But my favorite book af all time has to be Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke. I read it when i was about 8 and i simply loved it.

Unfortunately i dont read as much as i used to, but this thread has made me want to start again :)

I really like Mark Haddon's books especially the curious incident of the dog in the night time. It was about a Boy named Christopher Boone who had autism and his quest to figure out who killed his neighbor's dog. With his serious antics, it paved way for a very funny book. He did not like to be touched and would put his face on the ground when it was too noisy. He would also not want his food to touch and would not even dare eat them when they did.

Curious Incident was good but too short IMO.

If you're in for a quick read, try "Beat the Reaper". A rather adult book but well worth the read :)

I felt as though there was too much forced explicit language in the curious incident, it gave it an unrealistic feel :/

Nice thread, discovered it late.

Marcel Proust - À la recherche du temps perdu (2nd volume). (In search of lost time, probably the best "novel" of the 20th century.)
L.F. Céline - Voyage au bout de la nuit. (So incorrect that you can't stop reading.)
H. Balzac - La maison du chat-qui-pelotte. (One of Balzac's greatest novel, lesson: don't marry someone outside your social class ;), funny)
Charles de Gaulle - Mémoires de guerre (War memoirs, a must for every patriot)
A. Finkielkraut - L'imparfait du présent (Conservative thoughts on daily events from a philosopher that usually writes formal essays.)
Philippe Muray - Après l'Histoire (For the modern reactionary).

Im just finishing the second part of the 3rd book in the series. Its the best series of books i've ever read. I loved the series aswell and when it finished i looked into it and found out there are five books out at the moment. I went straight out and bought them and with each book it gets even better. I would definately advise buying at least game of thrones and giving it a read to test whether you like the way it is written, also i can't wait until "A Clash of Kings" comes out on T.V because it will be great to see some of the stuff that happens on the big screen.
